Since 1994, art lovers in New Orleans have ushered in the first weekend of August dressed in all-white linen, celebrating a communal attraction to contemporary art with a sense of whimsy and lightheartedness reminiscent of a school yard crush. In conjunction with White Linen Night on Saturday, August 5th, The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery in the Warehouse District and Where Y’Art, will debut their latest collaborative exhibition, Art Crush I, exploring the feeling of falling head over heels for the first time– be it with a piece of art, a place or another.
Curated by Dabito, a New Orleans-based designer, photographer for the New York Times Best Selling book “The New Bohemians” by Justina Blakenly and founder of the creative studio Old Brand New, Art Crush I is a testament to the serendipitous encounter of finding The One. Throwing aside rhyme or reason and abiding instead by intuition and simple attraction, Dabito’s selections of works featured in Art Crush I find commonality not in medium, hue, scale or theme, but rather in a particular kind of moment – one in which time seemingly stops and the person, the thing or the place you’ve been looking for is suddenly right in front of you.
Featuring original works by Muffin Bernstein, Anne Blenker, Debbie Boyd, Sean Clark, Drew Cooke, Emma Fick, Jono Goodman, Gavin Jones, Alex Kilburn, Andy Levin, Ellen Macomber, Rebecca Madura, Connor McManus, Meghan Methe, Leroy Miranda Jr., Jeff Morgan, Kris Muntan, Joel Scilley, Holly Sudduth, Vincente Weber, Debbie Willson and Francis Wong, Art Crush I is an inclusive showcase of New Orleans talent featuring a variety of mediums ranging from photographs and mixed media, to paintings, wood workings, printmaking and more. Adding a level of dimension to the exhibition, Dabito teamed up with West Elm to assert his keen eye for home design and art direction with vignettes installations around the artworks featured in the exhibition, allowing art patrons to envision how the pieces can be styled in a home setting. Together, the collection curated by Dabito speaks to the beautiful understanding that love – and art – exists in many forms and that the thrill of finding The One often comes when we least expect it.
Art Crush I will open with a launch party on White Linen Night from 7 to 10 PM Saturday, August 5th with live music by Cole Williams Band and libations by Compère Lapin’s bar maven Abigail Gullo. The interactive exhibition will allow show goers to interact with the art on their own comfort level by scanning QR codes to discover more about the artists, inspiration behind each piece, as well as shop additional works in their catalog on Whereyart.net. Art Crush I is the first half of a dual-location exhibition – the second half, Art Crush II will debut at the Where Y’Art’s gallery on Royal Street in the Marigny on Saturday, August 12th in conjunction with Dirty Linen Night from 6 to 9 PM.
